The lobby enclosure shall separate the elevator shaft enclosure doors from each floor by fire partitions. Elevator shafts are among the most vulnerable areas of a multistory structure in the event of a fire. Both of these locations usually require positive latching hardware. Elevator lobby doors in smoke partitions are required to be self closing or automatic closing but doors in care suite separations in group i 2 are not.

The fire rated elevator doors provide the requisite fire protection and the ul 1784 tested rolling magnetic gasketing system provides the necessary smoke protection. The icc recognizes the combination of the normally fire rated elevator hoistway doors and the rolling magnetic gasketing system which deploys an air tight film over the shaft door as an approved alternative for an enclosed elevator lobby. An enclosed elevator lobby shall be provided at each floor where an elevator shaft enclosure connects more than three stories.
